US President Donald Trump nominates Amy Coney Barrett to be the new Supreme Court Justice to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Washington/New Delhi, September 26, 2020: The President of United States of America Donald Trump on Saturday, has nomited the Judge Amy Coney Barrett to fill the Supreme Court seat left open by the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg with about five weeks out from the November 3 presidential election left until Election Day.
Amy Coney Barrett, 48, who is a circuit judge on the 7th U. S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in Chicago, was reportedly the only potential Supreme Court nominee who met with Trump in person. Barrett previously served as a clerk to conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who died in 2016.
She would be the sixth justice on the nine-member court to be appointed by a Republican president, and the third of Trump’s first term in office. The first two being Justice Neil Gorsuch, who replaced Late Justice Antonin Scalia, and Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who replaced Justice Anthony Kennedy upon his retirement. If confirmed, Amy Coney Barrett shall be the 5th woman appointed to the apex court.
Scalia died 269 days before the 2016 presidential election; Ginsburg died just 46 days before the 2020 election.
The move on Saturday caps a dramatic reshaping of the federal judiciary that will resonate for a generation. He also hopes it will provide boost his reelection effort as he looks to fend off Democrat Joe Biden.
The Democratic opponents, led by presidential candidate Joe Biden, have demanded that Republicans back off on replacing Ruth Bader Ginsburg — a liberal icon — until after the November 3 election. Leaders of the Republican majority in the Senate, which is tasked with confirming Supreme Court nominees, said they have enough support to hold a vote on the nomination either before the election or at worst during the “lame duck” session between the election and the inauguration of the next President in January.
If Ms. Barrett is confirmed, the Supreme Court would have a 6-3 conservative majority. Ms. Barrett was only appointed to the bench for the first time in 2017. A deeply conservative Catholic, she is considered hostile to abortion rights -- a key issue for many Republicans.
The group is based in South Bend, Indiana, where Barrett lives with her husband and seven children. Critics worried that its ideology may influence Barrett’s decisions, a perspective conservatives regard as anti-Catholic bigotry.
Barrett gave a 2006 commencement speech at Notre Dame Law School in which she said that lawyers should view their work through the lens of religion. She expressed the hope that each graduate would “fulfill the promise of being a different kind of lawyer.”
Confirmation hearings are slated to begin Oct. 12, with just over three weeks for Barrett to be confirmed before Election Day. On Sunday, 27th September, Sen. Lindsey Graham, who leads the Senate Judiciary Committee – the panel tasked with vetting judicial nominees – said that the confirmation hearings will begin Oct. 12 and that the committee should clear Barrett's nomination by Oct. 26. That would leave the full Republican-led Senate with roughly a week to confirm Barrett in the final days of the presidential campaign.
